Your Options for Liposuction: Upper and Lower Body

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that reduces the size and alters the shape of the body by removing fat deposits. Commonly referred to as “lipo”, liposuction can dramatically reshape and enhance the contour of the body by reducing. There are two types of options for liposuction procedures performed by surgeons – – upper body and lower body liposuction.

UPPER BODY LIPOSUCTION

Upper body liposuction can be used to remove excess and unwanted fat from the upper body. Many patients who have undergone massive weight loss or women following pregnancy have found upper body liposuction helpful to remove excess skin and stubborn fat deposits.

Some of the areas that are targeted for upper body liposuction include:

• Under or in between the shoulder blades
• What are known as axillary fat pads (or the fat that builds up where the shoulders meet the upper region of the breast, near front and back of the armpit)
• The posterior waist region (including the lower and middle region of the back)
• Chin and neck region
• Arm region, including fatty tissue above the triceps

LOWER BODY LIPOSUCTION

Lower body liposuction helps to provide patients definition. Weight loss in the lower region of the body can be more difficult and challenging than other areas of the body, including the upper body. Unfortunately, despite what some weight loss and training programs try to claim, you cannot spot train and target the areas where you want fat to be eliminated through diet and exercise. This is why lower body liposuction is a great option for those stubborn lower body regions, including but not limited to:

• Hips
• Stubborn belly fat in the waist and abdomen area
• Thighs
• Buttocks
• Around the knees and ankles

THE PROCEDURE

The process for both upper and lower liposuction requires being placed under general anesthesia in a surgical center. The procedure itself involves using a tool to extract the fat from the desired area and can take anywhere from one to four hours. The recovery from liposuction can vary from patient to patient and his or her pain tolerance. Patients should expect swelling and bruising. Patients are typically able to walk within 24 hours of the procedure and the full recovery can take a few weeks

WHO SHOULD CONSIDER UPPER & LOWER BODY LIPOSUCTION

Liposuction is a great option for patients that have not been able to reduce the size and alter the shape of areas of their body with consistent methods of diet and exercise. Patients who have experienced massive weight loss (both from natural methods and weight loss procedures) have found liposuction helpful to remove remaining unwanted fat deposits and help tighten and contour the body.

In order to be considered for both upper and lower body liposuction, a patient must first be in overall good physical health and maintain a stable weight. Like any cosmetic procedures, these procedures come with typical risks associated with surgery. It is also recommended that patients to quit smoking, as smoking is known to slow down the healing process and can increase risks of complication following the procedure.
